Project: 1,600 SF Single-Family residence, renovation + addition
Location: Somerville, MA
The project goals were to create a compact modern home that maintains the spirit of the original worker’s cottage, provides a strong connection to the landscape, and embraces the owners’ lifestyle of entertaining and working from home, all while being sustainable in size, materials and construction.
While the form of the cottage was designed as a contemporary interpretation of the original building, the single story addition was designed to respond to the landscape; the floor is broken up into a series of multi-level platforms that one navigates as an extension of the site topography (stepping up and then back down at the as one moves throughout the house).
Material selections were also driven by the ecological goals for the project and include a green roof, mineral wool insulation, and reclaimed wood flooring.
